THERAPEUTIC GUIDANCE COACHING
Over the course of many years, Doug has done the hard work of healing his own wounds. His lifelong battle with anxiety, accompanied by social phobia and a childhood deficiency of self-worth, has positioned him to intimately know the landscape of inner healing. He is both a fellow traveler and a gifted healer for men suffering with anxiety, depression, grief, and loss.
Though personal study and group encounters have been extremely helpful for Doug, he attributes his most enduring change to meeting one-on-one with teachers, therapists and coaches. The right and timely one-on-one encounter engenders trust, safety, and calm – the very elements necessary for vulnerability. When integrity, respect, and imagination are present between an experienced guide and one seeking guidance, miracles can occur.
Doug brings an abundance of clinical knowledge and therapeutic experience to the coaching framework. His years of providing psychotherapy have been built upon contemplative and cognitive behavioral theories, emphasizing the internal family systems model as a game-changer. His masterful use of reimagining and role-play have been agents of transformation for many men. Traditionally, men have been severely underserved, resulting in emotional repression and toxic behavior.
Authentic individuation is the antidote to heal male inferiority and ineffectiveness. In the words of Jungian analyst Robert A. Johnson: "A great sense of security develops from this process of individuation. One begins to understand that it isn’t necessary to struggle to be like someone else, for by being one’s own self one stands on the surest ground."
Actively reaching your potential is much like the evolutionary energy pushing nature forwards – the difference is that you must befriend the healing energy within. When a man works to heal his wounds, he co-creates a deepened, enriched Self, empowering him to live according to his own internalized standards of excellence.
ARE COACHING AND THERAPY THE SAME?
The short answer is NO. Psychotherapy is classified and regulated by state and federal laws as a healthcare profession, duly authorizing psychotherapists to diagnose and treat mental health disorders. Unlike psychotherapy, coaching is not recognized as a healthcare profession; therefore, life coaches are not by law permitted to diagnosis and/or treat mental health disorders.
Because of the classification difference between coaching and psychotherapy, a coaching client does not have the same legal right to confidentiality as if under the care of a psychotherapist. Confidentiality involves a restriction on a client’s private information and is defined by various state and federal laws and ethical standards. Though coaches are not legally mandated to do so, they should do their utmost to protect their client’s privacy.
Due to my long career as a psychotherapist spanning over 30 years, I am very knowledgeable regarding confidentiality, ethical responsibility, and other issues such as mandated reporting. Prior to the start of our coaching relationship, I will discuss these matters with you to avoid any misunderstandings. I know how important it is to establish trust between myself and my client, and am dedicated to doing so.
While all of the above matters, what equally matters is to reconnect with what brought you here in the first place. If you hire me, I will first help you get clear on what’s going on inside you and in the world surrounding you. My expertise in swiftly contextualizing a client’s life and helping them restore the head and heart connection has shaped my life career into a sacred calling!
